Board of Directors
Introducing the 2021 Board of Directors:
Melody Hilman – President
Born and raised in Banff, Alberta, Melody completed her BScN in 2005 at Mount Royal College through Athabasca University. She started her nursing career in Northern Alberta with a pediatric focus. In 2007 her first son was born with an L4/L5 myelomeningocele. This started a deep interest in Spina Bifida and its impact on both individuals and families. Melody and her husband a long with three sons now live in the Edmonton area. Working as a rural emergency nurse she also has many community involvements- including sitting as Co-President of the Northern Alberta Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association, local church involvement and managing the local youth sledge hockey program. She is passionate about educating and empowering both individuals/families in advocacy.
Mat Figeys – Vice President
Mathieu (Mat) Figeys is currently a forth year doctoral student and a staff Registered Nurse with Alberta Health Services. If you are ever feeling down, make sure to have coffee with Yuan, a young lady with admiringly energy and passion for life to build her community. As the newest board member to SBHANA, Yuan has been volunteering for over 10 years without any stop. With a determination to enjoy life to her best as a girl born with Spina Bifida, Yuan has been juggling her commitment in two jobs, university and board positions with a few Non-Profit Organizations. She volunteers because it brings out her “true self”. Having met many amazing people at SBHANA, Yuan is proud to serve the team better at her new role.
I met my first friends with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in junior high. I went on to play sledge hockey and met many other friends with the conditions. I met my husband through sledge hockey, and he has both spina bifida and hydrocephalus as well. I am also a registered nurse at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
