Volunteer Appreciation
SBHANA is extraordinarily grateful to our team of dedicated volunteers. The work you do—be it ongoing or temporary—is invaluable to us as an organization. Although SBHANA does have paid office staff, the majority of our programs are run by volunteers, and our entire board of directors consists of unpaid volunteers. Thank you so much for choosing to dedicate your time and energy to our organization; we hope that the joy you experience while volunteering is as immense as our gratitude.
Harmanie Taylor – NoLimits Coordinator
Harmanie has been involved with SBHANA since 2006. It was a natural fit for Harmanie to coordinate NoLimits. She’s very excited about the direction that NoLimits is taking, and that it’s been able to grow in recent year! Harmanie’s favourite part of volunteering is seeing how it helps transform lives by increasing the quality of life for those with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and their families.
Monica Sneath – Camp Freedom Director
In 1998, Monica became involved with SBHANA and joined the Board of Directors when her daughter with spina bifida was a year old. Darlene and Monica started Camp Freedom in the summer of 2000 when they noticed a need to connect teens with spina bifida. Her favourite parts of volunteering are the amazing people she’s met over the last 15 years and seeing the positive impact that camp has on teenagers with spina bifida.
Darlene Cathcart – Camp Freedom Director
Darlene joined SBHANA’s board when her daughter with spina bifida was three months old. Camp Freedom started in 2000 when Darlene and Monica noticed the need for teenage members of SBHANA to be able to connect with each other, share experiences, and gain independence from their parents. Her favourite part of volunteering are all the amazing, generous, and kind people she has met.
Kaitlyn Pretty – Hope Classic Committee
Kaitlyn got involved with SBHANA in 2012. After helping to plan the most successful Northern Alberta Hope Classic yet, she returned in 2013 to plan the 6th Hope Classic. She chooses to volunteer with SBHANA because it is a great environment within which she can help make changes locally. Kaitlyn’s favourite part about volunteering with SBHANA is the amazing people she gets to meet and work with.
Nicole Stefaniszyn – Hope Classic Committee
Nicole got involved with SBHANA about six years ago. After having participated yearly in the Hope Classic since its beginning in 2008, she joined the planning committee in 2012. 2012 also marked her last year as a participant in the Hope Classic; in 2013, she returned solely to the planning committee. She chooses to volunteer because she loves the association and the office staff.
Yuan Zuo – Hope Classic Committee
Yuan was born with spina bifida. She started volunteering four years ago and hasn’t stopped! She helped plan the 2012 and 2013 Hope Classic. She volunteers because it brings out her “true self.” She loves that everyone is so accepting, and working with the organization has taught her many lessons about herself. She’s met many amazing people at SBHANA, and she’s proud to call them her friends.
